Frequently Asked Questions
What is BowTie Pro™?

BowTie Pro™ is a technically advanced yet fast and easy to use tool to facilitate the creation of risk assessments using the bowtie methodology.

The BowTie Pro™ software is used by many companies, government organisations and universities around the world who have found real benefits in using the software. As the name suggests, BowTie Pro™ starts with the bow-tie and leads into a range of analysis modules such as Risk Registers. The bow-tie can then be used to quickly move to other analysis techniques.

BowTie Pro™ also has a range of outputs which facilitate diagrams being published to PDF and the web, and images or data displayed in reports which enables items such as critical task listings and risk registers etc to be extracted easily.

There are two editions of BowTie Pro™, to accommodate organisations of all sizes, i.e.

  • BowTie Pro™ Standalone Edition

BowTie Pro™ Standalone Edition has full functionality but stores all data files on the local PC. Licencing for the Standalone Edition is on a named user basis.

  • BowTie Pro™ Cloud Edition

BowTie Pro™ Cloud Edition is a fully editable web based version, with all the data being stored in central data centre and accessed via a secure HTTPS connection.

The BowTie Pro™ Cloud Edition only requires a web-browser, providing a low IT implementation on desktop environments.

All the data can be setup as desired with diagrams, reports and exports being displayed or accessed on the web.

BowTie Pro is regularly used for the following processes
  • Demonstration of risk
  • Communications of the dangers and consequences
  • Creating a better understanding of specific risks
  • Maintaining a hazard register
  • Creating Organisational improvements
  • Auditing systems

Experience shows that BowTie Pro is an intuitive product which is readily usable by people familiar with the bowtie assessment process.

We can provide bespoke training for those users that are not familiar with the methodology.

Bowtie is the best way to map all significant risks within a large company. Once risks for a certain location have been mapped, this information can be used for similar (but not necessarily equal) locations. BowTie Pro™ supports the learning organization, because it makes it easy to update risk management knowledge once new insights in risk management become available.

The main purpose of the Bowtie method is to provide a clear visual understanding of how risks are controlled. Using Bowtie software, organisations can map out threats, consequences, and control measures in one simple diagram. This makes it easier to explain complex risk scenarios, highlight weak points, and strengthen safety systems. The Bowtie method turns risk management into something practical and easy to communicate across all levels of a business.

A Bowtie and a HAZOP are both risk assessment tools, but they serve different purposes. A HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) focuses on identifying potential problems in a process through a structured workshop. The Bowtie method, on the other hand, provides a visual summary of how hazards are controlled, showing both causes and consequences in a single view. Bowtie software is often used alongside HAZOP findings to show how each risk is managed and to ensure controls are clearly understood and monitored.

Yes, Bowtie software can be tailored to meet the needs of different organisations and industries. Users can customise templates, terminology, and reporting features to match their internal processes and standards. Whether used for corporate risk management, safety assurance, or environmental protection, Bowtie software offers flexibility while maintaining consistency across teams and sites.

Yes – We can organise a demo of BowTie Pro using teams so that you appreciate the full power and ease of use of the system.

The bowtie diagram provides a powerful graphical representation of the risk assessment process which is readily understood by the ‘non-specialist’.

A bowtie diagram shows a hazard in the centre, what could cause it (threats) on the left, what could result from it (consequences) on the right, and the controls that prevent or mitigate those events. It’s:

  •  Easy to understand
  • Visually engaging
  • Great for communicating risk to diverse audiences

This is the leading methodology that combines threats, and their preventative controls (the fault tree) with the potential consequences and the mitigating controls (the event tree).
